The most important historical building of Torri del Benaco is the Scaliger Castle which is located at the southern entrance of the town, adjacent to the port.
Although Torri del Benaco has been of proven importance for Roman settlements in the area, it is not certain that the present castle was built on a previous Roman fortress.
We know certainly that it was built together with the perimeter defensive walls in the X century in the Lombard period by Berengar I king of Italy and king of the Romans, and later modernized by the lords of Verona, the Scaligeri, at the end of the 1300s.
Today the castle can be visited and houses an ethnographic museum that preserves historical finds of various dates bearing witness to local culture and tradition.
Among other things, ancient tools for the construction of fishing and transport boats; olive cultivation and pressing tools; evidence of lemon cultivation; rock engravings of the first local inhabitants and more.
Definitely worth a visit between a walk on the lakefront and an aperitif on the harbor.
