A Magnificent Medieval Fortress Near Lake Garda

If you would like to enrich your Lake Garda holiday with a fascinating cultural excursion, Avio Castle (Castello di Avio) is a destination that should definitely be on your itinerary.

Perched above the village of Sabbionara di Avio, between Verona and Rovereto, this impressive medieval fortress has watched over the Adige Valley for more than a thousand years. Its imposing walls and towers, clearly visible from the motorway below, hide a remarkable combination of history, art and breathtaking scenery that appeals to couples, families and anyone with a passion for discovering authentic places.

From Hotel Menapace, the castle is just a 40-minute drive, making it one of the most rewarding day trips to enjoy during your stay on Lake Garda.

More Than a Thousand Years of History

The earliest records of Avio Castle date back to 1053, when it was known as Castellum Ava.

Its position was chosen for a good reason. Standing high above the valley, the fortress controlled one of the most important routes between Italy and Central Europe, following the Adige Valley where the ancient Via Claudia Augusta once connected the Roman Empire across the Alps.

For centuries the castle belonged to the powerful Castelbarco family, who gradually transformed a military stronghold into an elegant noble residence. Ownership later passed to the Republic of Venice and then to the Habsburgs before eventually returning to the Castelbarco family.

In 1977 the estate was donated to the FAI – Italian National Trust, which carefully restored the castle and opened it to visitors, preserving one of northern Italy’s finest medieval landmarks.

What to See During Your Visit

Avio Castle is much more than an ancient fortress.

The visitor route takes you through courtyards, towers, defensive walls and historic buildings, offering an immersive journey into medieval life.

Among the highlights are:

  • the impressive Keep, the castle’s most recognisable landmark;
  • the House of the Guards, decorated with remarkable frescoes depicting knights, battles and medieval military life;
  • the Baronial Palace;
  • and the famous Love Chamber (Camera dell’Amore), whose beautifully preserved frescoes portray scenes of courtly love and are considered among the finest examples of medieval painting in the Trentino region.

The combination of architecture, art and history makes the visit enjoyable even for those who are not usually interested in museums.

Spectacular Views Over the Adige Valley

One of the most memorable moments of the visit is reaching the castle’s panoramic terraces.

From here you can admire sweeping views across the Adige Valley, the vineyards of the Vallagarina and the surrounding mountains. On clear days the scenery is simply stunning and helps visitors understand why this strategic hilltop was so important throughout history.

Don’t forget your camera—the views alone are worth the trip.

Surrounded by Vineyards and Olive Groves

Even the walk up to the castle is part of the experience.

A pleasant path winds through vineyards, olive trees and cypress-lined slopes, creating a peaceful atmosphere before you even reach the entrance.

Spring and summer bring lush green landscapes, while autumn transforms the vineyards into beautiful shades of gold and red, making this one of the most picturesque times of the year to visit.

A Great Destination for Families

Avio Castle is also an excellent choice for families travelling with children.

Its towers, walls, staircases and battlements naturally spark children’s imagination, turning the visit into a real medieval adventure.

Throughout the year, the FAI also organises family-friendly events, guided tours and educational activities that make the experience even more engaging for younger visitors.
