Before the construction of the Gardesana Orientale state road, opened in 1929, which runs along the eastern shore of Lake Garda from Peschiera to Riva del Garda, locals moved and transported goods from one village to another by walking along a dense network of paths clinging to the mountain.
Aided by donkeys and mules to which they tied the “Baresola“, a self-made wooden sled, they transported jute sacks with the precious harvested olive from the steep fields to the small village mills, once present in large quantities, for the production of the oil that before the advent of tourism was the main source of income.
Our hinterland is therefore still enriched by these cobbled “mule tracks” that weave silently connecting villages and crossing olive groves, giving those who travel it emotions and views of other times.
An overview of these routes can be given by the new service we offer at this link, with an interactive map of our neighboring area, with directions to the routes and main attractions.
