The Lower Garda and Upper Mantua region is rich in historical and landscaping attractions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Garda’s <\/span>emissary river, the Mincio<\/b>, which reaches from the lake to <\/span>Mantua<\/b>, forming the 3 lakes that surround the ancient city, constitutes by itself one of the main attractions and the backbone of a dense <\/span>network of bicycle routes<\/b> that expand across the gentle plain and connect small towns and villages rich in history.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The area can be <\/span>easily traveled by bicycle<\/b> thanks to a dense network of <\/span>low-car travel routes<\/b> and especially thanks to the presence of the <\/span>Mincio bicycle path<\/b> (the Peschiera- Mantova), one of the most beautiful Italian bicycle paths, which for more than <\/span>40 kilometers<\/b> runs along the course of the river, <\/span>from Peschiera del Garda and reaches Mantova<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Short detours make it possible to touch on the<\/span> various hill towns<\/b> washed by the river and then graft onto the inland network, alternating slightly <\/span>undulating routes with flat white roads<\/b>, go into the woods or stay among cultivated <\/span>fields and vineyards <\/b>and along water channels. It is an opportunity for visiting the villages and their historical and cultural beauties.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

With the <\/span>end of the Roman Empire<\/b> this whole area close to the Alps was constantly visited by <\/span>barbarian peoples<\/b> moving from the north. That is why from the Middle Ages the first <\/span>protective fortifications<\/b> arose, which later, rebuilt and enlarged first by the Scaligeri, lords of Verona, and the Gonzaga, lords of Mantua, and then by the Venetian republic, formed that <\/span>network of Castles<\/b> and Fortified Villages so frequent throughout this territory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting from the Lower Lake, we find immediately after Peschiera del Garda, and already in the province of Mantua, the towns of <\/span>Ponti sul Mincio, Monzambano and Castellaro Lagusello<\/b>, which we now briefly present.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Ponti sul Mincio<\/h2><\/span>
<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Bordering Peschiera del Garda Ponti overlooks the <\/span>Mincio valley<\/b>. Probably of <\/span>Celtic origin<\/b> demonstrated by archaeological findings, Ponti is characterized mainly by the <\/span>Scaliger-era castle<\/b> erected with large pebbles from the river.<\/span><\/p>\n

The castle is defined as an “<\/span>enclosed castle<\/b>,” polygonal and elongated in shape and enclosed within <\/span>five towers<\/b>, two of which are true buildings enclosed by walls, and the other three constituting recesses of the patrol walkway.<\/span><\/p>\n

From the top of the castle there is a <\/span>wide view of the valley<\/b> below.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Monzambano<\/h2><\/span>

Perched on a hill and overlooking the Mincio Valley, Monzambano is characterized by its <\/span>medieval castle (1200)<\/b>. Certainly the area was populated in <\/span>Roman times as numerous archaeological finds confirm. Traces of pile-dwelling settlements and grave goods of<\/span> Celtic origin, remains of Roman roads and rural villas<\/b> have been found.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

<\/span><\/div>

The medieval village probably consisted of houses leaning against the fortified wall in which to take refuge in case of attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

There was no dwelling of the local lord in the <\/span>fortress, so its function was one of protection<\/b>, sighting and signaling.<\/span><\/p>\n

The interior of the fortress has not long housed an interesting <\/span>multimedia museum<\/b> (not always open) that illustrates the history and life of the castle.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Castellaro Lagusello<\/h2><\/span>
<\/div><\/div><\/div>
<\/span><\/div>

Considered one of the <\/span>most beautiful fortified villages in Italy<\/b>, Castellaro Lagusello, in the municipality of Monzambano, stands on a rise next to one of the last <\/span>small lakes<\/b> left among the moraine hills after the <\/span>glaciations<\/b>. The lakes, which must have been numerous, gradually silted up, turning first into swamps and then into hygrophilous meadows.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

<\/span><\/div>

The remains of a pile-dwelling settlement, <\/span>arrowheads, ceramic and metal material<\/b>, and amber artifacts have been found in the Castellaro area, which also testify to the intensification of trade.<\/span><\/p>\n

The complex, which also contains the remains of a <\/span>12th-13th century Scaliger castle<\/b>, is considered an incredibly <\/span>intact <\/b>example of a medieval settlement. <\/span><\/p>\n

The ensemble is surrounded by <\/span>cobblestone curtain walls<\/b> with Guelph battlements, punctuated at regular intervals by square or rectangular towers, which are almost preserved for the entire perimeter.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

The <\/span>small heart-shaped lake<\/b> is privately owned and is a <\/span>protected nature reserve<\/b>, providing shelter to several <\/span>dozen species<\/b> of resident, migratory and wintering birds.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

In <\/span>April<\/b> (in 2024 from<\/span> 25 to 28 April<\/b>) the <\/span>Flower Show<\/b> is held in Castellaro. Exhibitors include floriculturists<\/strong>, creative craftsmen, floral installations and much more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Numerous side events: exhibitions, creative workshops, multi-sensory performances, guided tours<\/strong> of the village, the Bell Tower and the Castellaro Lagusello reserve.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>
